MARMO STORIES

Travertine, the Romans’ favourite stone, and a key trend for 2025

From the Colosseum to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Travertine has shaped some of Italy’s greatest architectural masterpieces, making it one of the most fascinating and sought-after materials among interior designers and architects worldwide.

Thanks to its textured yet minimalist appearance, it has become the undisputed star of all minimalist design projects in 2025. Join us and discover some interesting facts about this timeless material.

From Ancient Rome to today

Cave del Barco

Around the 3rd century BC, the Romans discovered this unique stone and began quarrying it in the ancient Barco quarries near Tivoli, (then Tibur). Since then, Travertine has been used to lend a sense of grandeur and timeless charm to both interiors and exteriors.

Travertine is a sedimentary stone composed mainly of calcium carbonate (about 95%), formed near springs and lake basins — sometimes mixed with aragonite. Its naturally porous structure gives it a distinctive texture, full of voids and cavities.

This earthy quality has made a strong comeback in recent years. Its raw, tactile look pairs beautifully with minimalist interiors and creates an elegant contrast when combined with other natural materials such as wood, matte metals, or coarse textiles.

The imperfect elegance of Travertine

Travertine is easily recognisable for its porous, irregular texture — almost rustic in feel. Yet it’s precisely these imperfections that make it so warm and inviting, ideal for spaces like kitchens and living areas.

Its characterful surface adds depth and personality without sacrificing the elegance of a noble, time-honoured material. Different finishes can be applied — polished, honed, or sandblasted — to adapt its look and feel to styles ranging from classic to contemporary.

In recent years, large Travertine slabs have become increasingly popular for creating continuous surfaces — from floors to walls — both indoors and outdoors.
This approach reduces visible joints, enhances visual flow, and creates an immersive, sophisticated atmosphere.

The colours of Travertine

Travertine comes in a wide palette of natural shades, from warm beige and ivory tones to cooler greys and silvers.
Among our most appreciated selections are Travertine Classic, with its soft, timeless hues, and Travertine Silver, featuring elegant pearl-grey veining.

A story carved through the centuries

With its organic patterns and natural texture, Travertine tells a story you can feel.
Choosing it means embracing a centuries-long narrative — one that lives on in every vein, pore, and layer of the stone, and that continues to unfold from ancient Rome to today.
